Lega Mask from Bwami Society

Lega masks are used by the Bwami tribe of the Congo. The masks--which are not intended to be worn over the face--are used in initiation rites and reflect rank of members. During these rites the Lega masks are usually held in the hand, hung nearby, or worn on the body.

This mask (8.5 long x 5.5 wide, inches) is made of wood and is painted. It is unsual because of its dark, overall patina and shiny underside.
