Buckles have an interesting history in jewelry. They represent eternity, loyalty, strength and protection. There is no symbolic ambiguity: form follows function. It was during the 19th century that their popularity peaked with the rise of sentimental and mourning jewelry. The Birmingham versions are particularly coveted. This cuff is a perfect example of the Birmingham jewelry vernacular. Designed with a goodly amount of real buckle detail, there is also ornate and inventive patterning--both floral and geometric on the front half. The back half is smooth inside and out.
The cuff measures .75 inch wide, the outer circumference is 7.5 inches, the corresponding inside measurement is 7 inches. There are several marks inside which allowed for our identification. The bracelet is in very good condition.
