This animated salamander is a wonderful. The sculptor has captured his salamander well. So completely that this little figure really conveys its earthbound quality. Also, his strong and well-modeled head arcs up and ahead in an apt reflection of salamander-curiousity. This piece would make an endearing paperweight.

The Toraja Tribe hails from the coffee-producing mountains in the south of the country.

The cast bronze figure measures 5.75 inches long and 2 inches wide. In very good condition. There is one small casting hole in the tail.

This man-vessel has a wonderfull, toylike character and was made as a containter for lime paste (made from shells). The paste serves as one of the three ingredients of the widespread Southeast Asian practice of betel chewing. The ingestion of betel provides a mild euphoria.

The man is made of dark hardwood, bone and hair. The arms, legs and upper torso are carved from hardwood. The arms and legs swing back and forth and the head swivels. The lower torso, or vessel, is made from bone. Rough on the inside, it is plugged on the lower end. The carving is well-executed and the surface is shiny.
Exclusive of hair, the lime container measures 7.5 inches long.
